Why people should stop eating fast food?

1) Food hygiene

Not everyone who works in fast food restaurants is as careful about basic food hygiene as you probably are. How can you be sure that they washed hands before preparing your food or that the utensils they have used are clean? It’s not uncommon to read about fast food outlets that have been closed down because of poor hygiene, and that’s just the ones that have been caught!

2) Low price means low quality

Why do you think that some fast food outlets can sell their food cheaply? Primarily, it’s because they use the cheapest possible ingredients. That means burgers, with very little meat, wilted salad and burger buns that have more air in them than bread! This means it has very limited nutritional value and a load of salt added, to create some flavor.

3) It promotes poor animal welfare conditions

The constant pressure that is out on farmers by fast food restaurants, to drive prices down promotes the need for cruel, intensive farming methods. Factory farmed animals are forced to live in awful conditions. They are often also pumped full of chemicals to enhance their growth and fight infection and those chemicals can be passed on in the food you eat.

4) It can cause depression in teenagers

Because of all the hormonal changes, going on in a teenager’s body, they need a healthy diet to ward off mood swings and behavioral issues. Teenagers that eat more junk food than fresh food are nearly 60% more likely to suffer from depression.

5) It can increase the risk of kidney disease

The reason that fries are so tempting is because they contain huge amounts of highly processed salt which increases salivation and even causes a craving. The high salt and fat content in fries increases blood pressure and adversely affects the functioning of the kidneys.

The disadvantages of fast food

1) Fast food menu items are high in fat

Most fast food items are usually cooked in fat like French Fries and Donuts, which makes these foods calorie dense. Eating such can lead to undesirable weight gain and many other health issues.

2) Fast food menu items contain food additives and preservatives

Most fast food items have food additives and preservatives which can cause cell damage and may lead to certain types of cancer if taken in excessive amount or frequently.

3) Fast food menu items are high in sugar

Desserts like ice cream, cakes and pastries are packed with sugar that if taken in large amounts can cause elevated blood sugar that may lead to diabetes.

4) Fast food menu items are high in sodium

These include pizza, fries and chips that if taken in excessive amount could lead to cardiovascular and kidney disease. It is because these foods are known to contain very high sodium content from the added salt and other preservatives.

Reasons people eat fast food

Eating fast food regularly is linked to obesity and chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, but many people still choose junk food sources over their healthy, nutritious whole food counterparts. Fast food is typically cheap, processed and prepackaged, making it easily available, but there are several psychological motivators that predispose people to choosing it as a meal or snack.

1) Choosing convenience

Busy schedules often diminish the amount of time people have to prepare healthy, nutritious meals, so they opt for faster, easier options. Whole foods such as vegetables and meat take time and kitchen equipment to cook properly, while fast food hamburgers are usually served within minutes of ordering. Over time, that convenience becomes a habit and eventually a perceived necessity to keep up with such a fast-paced society. Disrupting that routine requires an investment of time, and most people prefer to stick with the faster option.

2) Developing addiction

People may also choose fast food simply because they have developed a mild physical dependence on it. Studies show that binge eating foods high in sugar or fat results in neurochemical changes in the brain similar to those that develop in drug addiction. According to a study published in “Physiology and Behavior” in October 2011, rats that habitually eat foods high in sugar and fat mentally crave more of those substances and experience withdrawal-like symptoms if they do not get access to it. After developing the habit, people may be neurochemically driven to choose fast food.

Fast food menu items that should never order

1) Certain Subway sandwiches

There were plenty of Subway employees warning people that most seafood sandwiches and the egg salad sandwich are just imitation meat and/or bagged products with an unethical amount of mayo mixed in, but this quote is the kicker: "Worked at Subway 2010-12. Only thing I have to say is that tuna and seafood packages used to have a label on it that said that it didn't contain dolphin or turtles in the meat, then that label suddenly disappeared in 2012." —tigers-in-circles

2) Hot dogs

From a former ballpark employee: "[The hot dogs] made it out of the package okay, and might even have been edible after we finished grilling them, and then they went into the water. Any hot dogs left at the end of the day went back into the fridge, and came out again the next day. Me and the other cook put our feet down on throwing out the water and old hot dogs after two full days, but the management didn't want to let us."

3) Anything fried from Olive Garden

Former O.G. employee UppersArentNecessary breaks down the worst things to order at the "Italian" eatery, and the morale of the story is basically don't eat there. Ever. But if you need specifics, here is this: "I don't know how often the frying oil is changed, but judging by the color... ugh. I know it smells rancid." And then there is this: "I don't know which dishes this comes with, but the potato and pepper mixture, which is fried, will often have pieces of pepper in it that have started to rot. Not growing-mold rotten, but definitely soft-discolored rotten." Woof.

4)The steak and beans from Taco Bell

As devotees of the great T.B., we are saddened to report this tidbit from Reddit userBeefcake21: "The beans start out looking like cat food, and the directions are, 'Add water and stir until you can't see white anymore.' The steak was just the worst on dish duty. If it would sit too long it would become like hair gel. It was the worst."

What should everyone know about fast food?

Fast food is addictive and your body gets used to the "high" from the fats, salts,  sugars, additives. So, be aware of why you are wanting it. Also, there have been many studies that prove that people will eat more of they are given larger servings They are terrible at self regulation so if they buy that up size meal because it's good value, then they will eat more than they intended. If they have a craving for chips etc, don't get fooled into buying a burger and drink too. Just get the smallest size chips.
